A boil water advisory is a public notice that the tap water has become unsafe to consume for a variety of reasons, including E. coli contaminations or burst water mains. Sometimes, it takes days for officials to notify the public that the water is unsafe. Notices are distributed in different ways, including a knock on the door or a phone call.
